“You can't actually become happy. You can only *be* happy.”
Fantastic ending to Lex Fridman’s interview with Sam Harris.
“What is the meaning of life?”, asks Lex.
Sam’s full answer is worth a listen. But the essence of it is: “You can't actually become happy. You can only *be* happy.”
The “illusion” that if only we did certain things now (get in shape, schedule a vacation, make more money - as Sam says, “whatever the contingency of your satisfaction seems to be in any present moment”), THEN at some point in the future, we will “become” happy — is just that; an illusion.
You don’t become happy. You can only be happy.
Van Gogh similarly says, “Small emotions are the great captains of our lives.”
