Love is built, not found. (And the same is true of Passion, too.)

This is something I’m not 100% sure about yet; but the older I get, the more I realize that Love is built, not found. (And the same is true of Passion, too.)

In the realm of relationships, there is so much to work on, to sustain long-lasting love — one that survives (and ideally thrives!) in truly destabilizing periods of stress: things like facing a major health or financial crisis together; or setting boundaries with other important & loved people in our lives (such as best friends, or in-laws).

In the realm of careers, a wise mentor once told me: “Things get more interesting the more you learn about them.” That always stayed with me, and I continue to find truth in it.

As with most things in life, it’s probably a mix of both: We may have an inclination, an initial attraction, to this or that person, or this or that line of work. It’s great to listen to that voice.

But it’s also important to realize that, beyond that point, Love, and Passion, are built, not further found.

It’s like finding a piece of land, to build a house on.
