“If you want to bring people together, don’t offer solutions. Explain the problem.”

“If you want to bring people together, don’t offer solutions. Explain the problem.”

Wonderful, wonderful insight from Jeremi Suri — and I think applicable to organizations too.

People don’t like being told what to do - even in the context of being offered solutions.

Rather, they want to feel empowered; that they have autonomy; and that they’re *part of* the solution, whatever it ends up being.

(Here, Jeremi is taking about FDR’s power to explain the problem of Great Depression to average Americans.)
