As we embark on year-end bonus season, I wanted to share ACTIONABLE advice for us MEN on how to support & be allies for our female colleagues!
This comes from a story the wonderful Nadine Ravani told me - one of the coolest stories I’ve heard in a work setting!
Nadine knows two friends, a man and a woman, who worked at the same company.
They had the same title; joined the company around the same time; performed at the same level; & received the same reviews.
When the company did a re-org, it promoted both the man & the woman into the same, higher title.
Afterwards, the MAN approached the woman, and said: “This is the bonus and salary bump I received with my promotion. I wanted to share this info because I want to make sure you got at least what I got, because you deserve it too.”
It turned out that the woman had received no bonus, and a smaller salary bump.
Next - and this is the KEY, really cool step - the MAN (not the woman), of his own initiative, approached management and asked for either an explanation or equal treatment.
The company said they made a mistake and gave the woman her equal bonus & bump.
How cool is that story!
