One of the perks of being married to the brilliant Masayo Nobe is that I continue to learn from her to become a better lawyer.
Two nights ago over wine🍷 and dinner 🥘 she taught me this great lesson: “Think of legal advice as a product.”
If your product sucks, would anyone want to buy it?
If your product is not user-friendly, or is too complicated, could anyone use it?
If your product is not marketed well enough, would anyone know to come to you to buy it?
If your product is priced too high, could anyone afford it?
If your product is not delivered timely, would anyone order it?
Just like when we order something from Amazon: We want something that actually works, that we can find, that’s at the right price point, and that’s delivered when we need it.
In the same way, legal advice needs to be user-friendly.
It’s not enough to know the law, or to know how to summarize the law — you have to deliver a product that people can actually use.
Brilliant!
