A beautiful way of looking at the goal of communication, from Greg McKeown (you may know him as the author of The New York Times bestsellers Essentialism, and Effortless):
The goal of true communication is to uncover more truth, together.
You come to the table with your truth.
I come to the table with my truth.
And when we leave, we should collectively have access to more truth than we started with.
__________
This means that communication is not about being right, or making your point, or how you feel about the person you're talking with.
At its core, true communication is about both of us helping each other to uncover more of the truth.
