This is a nice management insight from Mark Cuban:
If you hold someone responsible for some thing, but don’t give them the authority to do that thing, you’re setting them up for failure.
This is something I personally struggle with too — letting go of control is hard, especially when the stakes are high.
But this is a muscle that needs to be exercised.
Rather than withholding authority, try other methods to find comfort:
- Give clearer instructions
- Hold more frequent check-ins
- Build the feedback muscle (ability to give clear, honest and timely feedback)
- Build room / space for more failure, as a price for developing talent
