Our Persian New Year traditions.

Happy first moment of Spring tonight — and the Persian New Year!

All who celebrate around the world (~200 million) will be sitting at their version of the “Haft Sin” (Seven S’s) table at the moment spring starts — in California, that is 8:06 pm and 26 seconds. (In Tehran, it will be 6:37 am and 26 seconds.)

There are the seven mandatory items for the Haft Sin table (see my post from yesterday) — but every family also adds a few other items to their table that’s meaningful to them.

In our family, and typical of many families, we always added a book of poetry (for the meaning of life), a mirror (for self-awareness) and coins (for prosperity).

Most families also used to have a live goldfish — representing the movement of life. But many have switched to a fake goldfish recently — including us, using one of Issa’s toys!

For the last meal of the year, we have Sabzi Polo (herbed rice) and fish — to celebrate the themes of Spring, life, and new years.

For the first meal of the new year, we have something that has noodles — this is similar to the Japanese new year too, which is super interesting.

Happy Spring, happy Persian New Year!
