.io is crazy!

Facts never cease to amaze me: Did you know the domain .io (used by many tech companies) is the official country-code domain for a group of small islands in the Indian Ocean? (Hence, IO 🤯)

Unlike some country code domains, you are not required to live on the islands to register .io domains.

The domain became popular with startups because it is the abbreviation of standard industry term “input/output."

The more you dig the crazier it gets: Sovereignty over the IO islands is currently in dispute between Mauritius & the UK.

A 2019 advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice, and a 2021 ruling by the UN International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea have recognized Mauritius's sovereignty over the islands. The UK continues to occupy them.
