This is Jim.
Jim is the best soccer player I play with.
Even though others pick faster, younger, or more skilled players when they pick teams, I always pick Jim first.
Why?
Because Jim makes GOOD DECISIONS.
Being a good soccer player is not about skill or pace: Plenty of people have those in abundance.
It’s about DECISION-MAKING: picking the right pass, knowing when to slow down, when to speed up, when to attack, when to stand back, when to be aggressive, when to let something go.
That is why I love soccer: I can apply its lessons to work and life, too.
When I interview, I don’t look for skill, or experience, or accolades, or which school someone went to.
I look primarily for evidence of good decision-making — good JUDGMENT.
Does this person have good judgment? Do they understand timing? Do they understand context? Can I trust them to make the right decisions at the right times?
Good teamwork is about good decision-making.
That’s why I always want to be teammates with Jim.
